To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Quake/QuakeCon, MachineGames and id Software have released a new free episode for Quake on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.
Titled Dawn of the Machine, it introduces a full 19-map campaign that also includes its own soundtrack and a new Deathmatch map. The campaign itself brings players back into the boots of Ranger, as he battles to escape an illusory dimension. Runes can be found that will be used to unlock new routes, with health and ammo upgrades scattered through the levels.
New twists of familiar enemies are included, as well as new variations of weapons, such as the lightning-charged Super Axe and the Laser Cannon. The entire campaign has been made as a love letter for Quake, even down to the soundtrack being created by Christian Plogfors; the advanced level designer from MachineGames.
